I come from a family of artist & musicians. As a kid I'd copy Disney characters and trace Marvel superheroes. That got me started on a formal path as an artist. These influences affected my preference for rich, deep colours with a strong contrast. Many of my earlier sketches were done using ink and texta. Later oil, gouache, ink and more recently acrylic. There is still alot for me to improve on but I usually feel satisfied with artwork when it has emotional content and is technically correct. Moving into design, has seen more work done digitally, although I still start off with a pencil - usually a 'B'.

I find being an artist / illustrator helps me be a better designer, especially with conceptual development where I can sketch out my ideas and then show them to the client.

GOUACHE PAINT:

Gouache waterpaint can we really bring a piece of artwork alive. Be it artwork, signage or a map, the rich, bright colours
help to distinguish objects and details. The colour lasts for a very long time aswell. It is one of my preferred painting methods - I also paint with acrylics, oils and inks.

They can take awhile to paint although they are really worth the effort as they have a translucent quality which is very uplifting to view.

IMAGING WITH MIXED MEDIA:

The computer is just another medium for an artist. Mixing artwork which I have created with pencils, pens, ink, crayons, paint and digitally, using photoshop I blended them together using gradients, burnign, etching, and the like. As an artist I like busy, as a designer not so much - the end result is something I'm happy with as an artist but as a technician, its also quite staisfying as I am able to utilise many photoshop skill s within the design industry and have on many occassions to great effect.

See the 'BRANDING PAGE' for commercial applications and examples.

VECTOR ART - Realism:

Using Adobe illustrator, I can realistically render objects to look lifelike by recreating highlights, reflections and shadows.
This example took 2 weeks to produce.

iLLUSTRATIONS - Characterisations:

Working from initial handdrawn or by using a drawing tablet I can create characters to be used either as static artwork or in animations. This image to the left was originall taken from a series of drawings I did for a Cafe Chalkboard Menu. They were redrawn and adapted for an eLearning project but I'm sure they would work just aswell as an animation. One day maybe..

Friendly, family drawings like these are great for pamphlets and the like.

CHARACTER DESIGN:

These characters were created as part of a course requirement I had to undertake while studying, they demonstrate teh quality of colour pencils bring to a rendered drawing. Soft grades bring subtlety.

Maybe we could add the heads onto the body below. Just kidding..

LIFE DRAWINGS:
'Train the eye to draw what you see and not what you 'think' you see. Observe daily life'.

While in drawing classes, I'd analyse the human body from outside in. I always loved the boney and musclular areas where contrast could be found, defining shape and line. I wasn't interested in producing a highly finished piece of art - this was a study. Many of my drawings are studies or sketches - even more so since I started using the computer. It's not lost art or a waste of talent.. its the foundation.

The nude is great to draw - the curved line and the interesting shapes of the human body connect with the mind and there is a great peace. Almost like touching the soul or finding our 'humanity'.

I usually draw figures with pencils of various grades and colours. I also can use chalks, pastels, charcoal and ink.

STILL LIFE:

A sucessful drawing doesn't usually 'just happen', planning is the key. A good eye, a good angle and an understanding of vanishing points are crucial and rendering a realistic representation. This example works well on a few levels. Its well drawn, its VPs / perspective is true while thesubject matter is a grouping of like objects with a spark of humanity in the shape of Homer J. Simpson. Other elements which make this drawing enjoyable to look at are the various textures and the detail.

A drawing can bring alot of interest and add that touch of humaness to an add or layout. Even vector or computer artwork
can bring something to the page.
